RAT/MICE INFESTATION Rats and mice can spread diseases like typhoid
and trichinosis, and they leave fecal pellets
and urine stains which can cause salmonella
poisoning.
They are great climbers able to maneuver up some brick walls and swim across streams. Amazingly, an adult rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. If it can squeeze its skull through a hole, its body can be elongated and get through, as well. The rat species has a short lifespan, yet can increase its population rapidly under the right conditions. Capable of living up to three years, it often dies before its first birthday due to predators. However, its short gestation period and the fact that females are always “in season”, keeps populations growing. A female Norway rat is capable of giving birth to six or more babies at a time. They give birth twenty one days after mating and can mate again in as little as two days, repeating this cycle five times during a single year. The cycle varies according to available resources and population overcrowding. Disease A rat killed one third of Europe with the Plague. Even today, they carry Plague along with many other diseases: murine typhus, leptospirosis, rat-bite fever, hantavirus, infectious jaundice, tularemia and others. They contaminate food and cause food poisoning like salmonella. They also carry a number of parasites like fleas, ticks, lice and tapeworm that take to human hosts quite easily. A rat colony eats an amazing amount of food, but even more amazing is the amount of food they contaminate-up to 25 times the amount eaten. Mice are similar in the way they spread, mainly Salmonellosis, which is a type of food poisoning, and gastro-enteritis accompanied by headache and fever. Parasites include mites, ticks, tapeworm and fleas. Damage to homes and property Rats and mice can also cause damage to houses and other manmade structures by building their extensive burrows under foundations undermining the structure and causing areas to sag. They do additional damage to wood with their incessant gnawing required to sharpen and refine their constantly growing teeth. They chew anything they can get their teeth on-wires, pipes, insulation, wood. They are continually incontinent and leave a trail of urine everywhere they go. Rats and mice, especially dead ones, stink and will make buildings unbearable just because of stench. You cannot sell a piece of property without disclosing, and usually fixing, a rodent infestation. If the chewed electrical wires cause a fire, your property can be a total loss. More commonly, general damage requires significant repair and replacement costs. Average loss runs 5-10%. Need for Professional Help It is generally not a good idea to try to tackle this problem if you are not trained in this field for several reasons. Rodents especially are challenging animals because they can squeeze through such small openings and because they can become trap and bait shy. Without training, experience, and proper equipment it is nearly impossible to get rid of the rats, keep them out and clean up the mess they created.
