RACCOON INFESTATION Wild raccoons are very strong, very unfriendly,
and very dangerous when cornered. Raccoons tend to look for warm, safe, spots
especially females that are expecting young.
They like to take advantage of the fact that
other predators may be discouraged to follow
them into a human haven. This is why the
most common infestation of these animals
is by a female that is looking for a nest.
Disease Like other urban wildlife, raccoons are also capable of transmitting serious illnesses. They are susceptible todistemper, rabies, raccoon roundworm, and simply inhaling the spores from raccoon droppings can cause a dangerous infection in humans. A raccoon infestation may require the use of protective equipment to remove the resulting mess. Damage to homes and property They are quite strong, wiry, animals and will chew, dig and tear insulation, water lines, as well as electrical wires, inside of walls causing thousands of dollars in potential repair costs, not just by the immediate damage they cause but by the subsequent electrical fires or floods that may result from their activities. They will also use these hard to reach places as a latrine so any insulation or flooring that has been saturated by their waste has to be treated or replaced. Danger to Children Raccoons are especially dangerous to children. Young children may think wild raccoons are tame and try to pet them or play with them, or even to bring them home. This can be especially dangerous because rabid or otherwise seriously ill raccoons sometimes appear tame or docile. But a raccoon that is acting tame, or one wandering around in the daytime, most likely is sick. Stay away from it and contact us immediately for prompt raccoon control. Need for Professional Help It is generally not a good idea to try to tackle this problem if you are not trained in this field for several reasons. To begin with, raccoon infestations pose a disease risk. Secondly, the trouble with trying to trap the raccoon on your own is most often it is a mother with babies. Then you are stuck trying to figure out where the nest is located, and trying to effect a humane removal of the youngsters. If you fail to find the nest in time the result can be a very unpleasant death for the babies, and an equally unpleasant smell in your house. Also an expert can figure out where the animal has travelled in the home and will be able to identify the repairs that need to be made. In addition even when caged, a raccoon can still be dangerous as it can reach out and scratch or bite the person that is handling the cage. Another reason to avoid handling the situation is you don't want to inadvdertantly break the law, as it is illegal to trap and release rabies vector animals in most states.
